About PAFC
The PAFC Congo Basin regional initiative, active in Gabon, Cameroon and the Republic of Congo, is a collaboration between several African national organizations that are members of the PEFC Alliance. The initiative aims to establish a regional approach to sustainable forest management certification in the Congo Basin. To date, PAFC Gabon, PAFC Cameroon and PAFC Congo have signed up to the initiative, which aims to promote sustainable forest management and the traceability of wood from the forest to the end product.
This unprecedented cooperation has resulted in the creation of a regional scheme known as the PAFC Congo Basin, including a sustainable forest management standard and a chain-of-custody standard. To provide companies with a tool that is both adapted to the local context and recognized internationally, the sustainable forest management standard was developed by local stakeholders in line with the requirements of the PEFC Council. In this way, the PAFC Congo Basin standard plays an essential role in the development of a strong forest economy, helping to combat deforestation, preserve biodiversity and meet the present and future needs of local communities, as well as the demands of international markets.
