The French Secretary of State for Biodiversity Bérangère Abba launches this Wednesday, January 20 the multisectoral platform for observation and fight against imported deforestation. This unique tool in Europe and the world aims to better inform consumers about products that carry a risk of imported deforestation and the commitment of major distribution companies in this area.
While forests represents 75% of the world's biodiversity, the National Strategy to Combat Imported Deforestation (Stratégie Nationale de lutte contre la Déforestation Importée - SDNI) aims to put an end, by 2030, to the importation of unsustainable forest or agricultural products that contribute directly or indirectly to deforestation beyond our borders.
On November 18, 2020, Bérangère Abba convened the SDNI Monitoring Committee. On this occasion, she announced a series of tools for private and public actors to strengthen the fight against imported deforestation, including the observation platform for the fight against imported deforestation.
This platform now makes it possible to accurately inform both consumers and companies about products that present a risk of imported deforestation: palm oil, soy, cocoa, natural rubber, beef and its co-products, wood and wood products. It includes an interactive map of imported deforestation flows.
"This platform offers real transparency to consumers on the products we consume, as well as to companies on their supply chain," said the Secretary of State for Biodiversity.
Eventually, the alert mechanism built from customs data cross-referenced with satellite data will strengthen the tools available to companies. A "zero deforestation" label to support consumers in their choices is also under consideration.
The Secretary of State for Biodiversity is actively promoting this subject at the European level to make it one of the major themes of the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
The ATIBT's commitments to combating deforestation are presented on the platform through the Fair&Precious initiative.
