Conclusions of workshop on sustainable value chains organized by CBFP in December

The CBFP regional workshop aimed to strengthen sustainable timber value chains in the Congo Basin.

From December 16 to 18, 2024, Douala, Cameroon, hosted the Regional Workshop on Sustainable Value Chains (SVC 2024) under the theme “From Kinshasa to Douala Heading to Belém - Sustainable Value Chains in Central Africa: Challenges, Perspectives, and Strategies!”. Organized by the Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP) in collaboration with COMIFAC and other regional entities, the workshop attracted around 200 participants, including policymakers, NGOs, and private-sector representatives.

ATIBT President Françoise Van de Ven played a prominent role during the event, contributing to discussions and shaping recommendations for follow-up actions. The workshop emphasized the importance of sustainable economic sectors to combat deforestation in the Congo Basin and aligned with preparations for COP 30 in Belém, Brazil.

Key Highlights:

  • Sessions Overview: ATIBT facilitated several pivotal sessions, including discussions on resource mobilization, industrial models, and the implications of log export bans. Other topics included ecotourism, bioeconomy, and the European Union’s Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).
  • Major Recommendations: Proposals included harmonizing regional policies, updating second-generation forest management plans, enhancing ecotourism infrastructure, and promoting the bioeconomy. Specific focus was given to strengthening value chains and improving governance for sustainable development.
  • Panel Insights: Recommendations were consolidated in plenary panels, with Françoise Van de Ven representing ATIBT as a resource person for key sessions.

The workshop also featured a side event on the Congo Basin Pledge 2.0, addressing funding mechanisms for post-2025 initiatives.

 

Participants lauded the Cameroonian government for hosting this impactful event, which showcased a united regional commitment to sustainable forest management and economic growth.
