Welcome to the organization BVRio, which joins the ATIBT !

BVRio is a non-profit organisation with a mission to promote the use of market mechanisms to facilitate compliance with environmental laws and support the green economy.

While originally focused on promoting environmental compliance in Brazil, more recently BVRio expanded its scope and activities to tackle international and global challenges. This includes work on timber legality, responsible agriculture, solid waste & plastics, forest legislation, climate & emissions, and industrial effluents. Currently, operations take place in South America, Europe, Southeast Asia, Africa and China. The work most relevant to BVRio becoming a member of ATIBT is its activities to promote the production and trade of legal and certified tropical timber. These include:

BVRio Responsible Timber Exchange (www.bvrio.com) – an online negotiations platform designed to promote the trading of forest products of legal and certified origin. The system was designed to facilitate compliance with legislation such as the EU Timber Regulation and the US Lacey Act. Integrated into the platform is a Due Diligence and Risk Assessment system to help buyers evaluate the supply chain of a timber consignment or verify FSC® and PEFC licences.

Design and Sustainable Wood Project – promoting the union between design and socio-environmental responsibility, bringing internationally renowned Brazilian designer directly to the heart of the Amazon, to teach new techniques of design and construction of furniture and utensils to a community forestry enterprise. In the forest, designers share their knowledge with the community members for the development of high value objects, made with sustainable wood, certified by FSC®.

Good Wood Expo – a roadshow of responsible promotional events which will take place around the world. The Expo creates markets for responsible timber from Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA) countries, increases the visibility of VPA and FLEGT timber, and raises awareness about the VPA process. The first Good Wood Expo was held in Indonesia in March 2019, with future events planned for Cameroon (November 2019), Republic of Congo (2020) and Ghana (2021).

In recent months, ATIBT and BVRio have had various meetings, in China but also in Europe. BVRio recognises the key role ATIBT plays in the implementation of international projects dedicated to the sustainable and responsible management of tropical forests. Sharing a focus on the Central and West African tropical timber sector and also the trade of tropical timber to China, BVRio sees cooperation between the two organizations as important to continue whichis why BVRio wanted to become a member of ATIBT. https://www.bvrio.org/
