WWF France invites you on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 from 10:00 to 11:30 to a workshop on the challenges of African tropical forests and timber. We will discuss the challenges in the Congo Basin, review WWF's approach and objectives for this priority ecosystem and identify some key action levers to improve management practices and ecosystem preservation.
The Congo Basin is home to the world's second largest tropical forest, after the Amazon. It is an incredible reserve of biodiversity, with over 400 species of mammals, 1,000 species of birds and 10,000 species of plants. It is also a huge carbon sink - 10% of the CO2 captured by plants in the world - as well as an essential source of food for more than 60 million people. This immense forest, which covers 286 million hectares, is currently facing degradation and deforestation due to the expansion of cultivated land, mining and illegal timber trade.
