OECD and FAO Public Consultation on the Guidance on Deforestation and Forest Degradation

15.07.2022

In parallel with the construction of the future European regulation against imported deforestation, the OECD and FAO are in the process of developing a Handbook on Deforestation, Forest Degradation and Due Diligence in Agricultural Supply Chains, based on the OECD-FAO Guidance on Responsible Agricultural Supply Chains. To ensure that the manual benefits from the views and experiences of all stakeholders, the OECD and FAO are launching a public consultation. Participation in the consultation is open until Friday 29 July 2022.

The structure the Guidance is a circular, iterative process. It’s recommended to read the whole Handbook before responding to the questions that are organized according to each step. Written submissions may be made publicly available. Data from the survey disaggregated as relevant by stakeholder group and geographic location will also be made public. For the survey, you can opt for an anonymous or a public contribution. You can answer as many or as few of the questions as you like; only the first four questions are mandatory.

The Handbook aims to support the application of due diligence approaches to the use and trade of commodities that may be considered at risk of association with deforestation or forest degradation according to company policies or the regulatory environment(s) in which the business operates.  Finally, while the focus of the handbook is on deforestation, recommendations can also be used for reducing adverse impacts on natural ecosystems that are not “forests” according to FAO definition.
