Gilles ETOGA has left us: a great defender of Cameroon's forests

21.02.2025

Mr. Gilles ETOGA had more than 25 years of high-level expertise in sustainable natural resource management and inclusive biodiversity conservation in the Congo Basin, and was an international coach on open standards.

Graduating from the Ecole Nationale Supérieur d'Agronomie (ENSA, University of Dschang) in 1991 with a Diplôme d'Ingénieur des Eaux et Forêts et des Chasses, his professional career began 32 years ago as a civil servant in the Ministry of Forests and Wildlife and continued as Senior Conservation and Policy Coordinator with WWF Cameroon, which he joined in 2005. His proven practical experience covered almost all of Cameroon's ecoregions (lowland rainforests, northern Sudan savannah, coastal forests, Mangroves etc....) in participatory natural resource management, including protected areas, bio-monitoring, law enforcement, environmental and social safeguards of conservation programs, climate change adaptation, mitigation through reforestation/restoration, land use planning, green products. Mr. ETOGA has made a strategic contribution to various natural resource policies.

In the face of this immense loss, the ATIBT wishes to express its profound support to Gilles ETOGA's family, as well as to the entire community committed to forest conservation in Cameroon and beyond. His departure leaves a huge void in the field of sustainable management and biodiversity protection. May his commitment and passion for forest conservation inspire future generations for many years to come. We extend our sincere condolences to his family and to all those who had the privilege of working with him.
