The European Commission is offering stakeholders the opportunity to test its information system for the regulation against deforestation

20.09.2024

As part of the implementation of Regulation 2023/1115, the European Union's anti-deforestation regulation (EUDR), the European Commission is opening a test period for interested stakeholders. The aim of this initiative is to test GeoJSON* files prior to the launch of the future European information system, which will play a key role in implementing this regulation.

A key requirement of the EUDR is the collection of GPS coordinates for production plots, enabling operators to input data into the EU's information system for due diligence declarations. The EU has adopted the GeoJSON format for submitting this information.

GeoJSON is an open format for exchanging geospatial data using the JSON standard, representing simple geographic entities and their non-spatial attributes. Using the JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) standard, GeoJSON is a format for encoding a variety of geographic data structures.

Interested companies are invited to participate as follows:

  • Send a maximum of three GeoJSON files complying with the technical documentation to ENV-EUDR-IS-TEAM@ec.europa.eu.
  • The subject of the e-mail should read as follows: “EUDR GeoTest - Company name - Test number” (for example, “EUDR GeoTest - company - Test 1”).
  • If GeoJSON files exceed 10 MB, they can be shared via the WeTransfer platform.

The European Commission undertakes to provide the results of these tests within a few days of receipt. The necessary technical specifications are attached to the announcement, and are also available on the official Europa website, along with all information relating to the future European information system.
This initiative is an opportunity for stakeholders to ensure that their files comply with the new regulation, thus guaranteeing better preparation for the system's entry into force.
