Douala regional workshop: Capacity building for the implementation of NDF in Central Africa

14.02.2025

ATIBT, in partnership with COMIFAC, FRMi and Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech - ULiège, is organizing a regional workshop from March 17 to 21, 2025 at the SAWA Hotel in Douala, Cameroon.

The aim of this event is to support players in the timber industry in the development and implementation of Non-Detriment Finding Trade Notices (NDFs), in compliance with CITES requirements.

Since February 2023, Central African countries have been required to produce non-detriment findings for the Afzelia,Khaya and Pterocarpus species. These assessments are essential to guarantee the continuity of exports to international markets, but their implementation remains a challenge to meet the challenges of an increasingly demanding market.

The workshop will bring together some 50 participants - representatives of CITES authorities, forestry experts, private-sector players and technical partners - with the following objectives:
Presentation and discussion of tools to support the development of NDFs
- Proposed harmonization of methodologies for assessing and monitoring export quotas
- Exchange of experience between producer countries
- Strengthening coordination between authorities, researchers and economic operators.

The expected outcomes of the workshop will be :
- Finalization and validation of tools to support the development of NDFs
- Adoption of a regional model framework for NDFs
- Establishment of a harmonized framework for monitoring export quotas.

This workshop is supported by the PPECF (Programme de Promotion de l'Exploitation Certifiée des Forêts), the European Union (ASP-Pacte Vert Cameroun) and UNICONGO (Fédération Forêt de l'Union Patronale et Interprofessionnelle du Congo).
