Reforestation activities in Cameroon's Unités Forestières d'Aménagement (UFA), carried out by the UFA-REFOREST project, were presented at the 8th Edition of the Journées d'Excellence de la Recherche Scientifique et de l'Innovation (JERSIE) in the Eastern Region, held on December 12 and 13, 2024 in Bertoua.
The event was chaired by Mr. Grégoire MVONGO, Governor of the Eastern Region.
Funded by the European Union, the UFA-REFOREST project is implemented by the Association Technique Internationale des Bois Tropicaux (ATIBT) with the support of its technical partners, including Nature Plus Asbl, Gembloux Agro Bio Tech and ENSET of the University of Douala. Four forestry companies benefit from this project: PALLISCO, AlpiCAM-GrumCAM, SEEF and SEFAC.

These days provided an opportunity to share with the scientific community the silvicultural innovations implemented within the forest concessions.
The innovations implemented by the project and its partners include forest seed harvesting techniques, seed conservation and storage, nursery seedling production techniques, identification of areas to be reforested, forest plantation installation techniques, plantation performance analysis, plantation follow-up and monitoring, forest plantation profitability studies, and carbon balance. The project hosts several researchers from universities in the South and North (Masters/Doctorate) who work in the field of applied forestry research, enabling us to constantly improve our knowledge of silvicultural matters.

Reforestation remains one of the most important ways of maintaining forest potential. ATIBT hopes to see the private forestry sector, the research community and technical and financial partners working together to contribute effectively to the restoration of forest massifs in the Eastern region and, more generally, throughout Cameroon.
