ATIBT is launching the Projet “Private sector Support for the domestic timber market” (ASP-MIB) in Republic of Congo

25.11.2024

The ASP MIB Congo project “ Appui au Secteur Privé du Marché Intérieur du Bois” aims to contribute to structure and valorize the domestic wood value chain by encouraging the use of legal and sustainable wood in the domestic timber market.

The forestry sector in the Republic of Congo plays an essential role in the national economy, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and craftsmen.
However, much of the harvesting and processing of timber in Congo takes place informally and illegally. This compromises the sustainability of forest resources, deprives the state of revenue and hinders the professionalization of the sector.

In response to these challenges, the ASP MIB Congo “ Appui au Secteur Privé du Marché Intérieur du Bois” project aims to structure and valorize the domestic wood value chain by encouraging the use of legal and sustainable wood.

Financed by the European Union Delegation to the tune of 2 million euros over 4 years, this project will contribute to the socio-economic development of the timber sector in the Republic of Congo, while supporting forest preservation and job creation.

Areas of intervention :

Axis 1: Improving sustainable management mechanisms in the timber sector
This thematic area aims to strengthen the domestic wood sector in the Republic of Congo by improving knowledge of the players involved, promoting dialogue and increasing the visibility of the value chain on a local and international scale.

Area 2: Strengthening the technical and financial capacities of local players
The aim of this axis is to improve the technical, operational and financial skills of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the wood sector.

Beneficiaries of the ASP MIB Congo project are :

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the wood sector.
These companies will benefit from technical training to improve the quality of their products, advice on complying with legal regulations (such as the FLEGT VPA) and easier access to financing to invest in their activities.

Craftsmen and small businesses who are not members of trade associations
Thanks to the project, these players will benefit from training in business management, access to financing and opportunities to structure themselves into cooperatives or associations to be more competitive and visible on the domestic market.
Vocational training centers specializing in wood trades
The project will support these centers so that they can offer training tailored to the needs of the sector, while improving the quality of teaching and technical equipment available to them.
Wood industry trade associations: These associations, representing craftsmen, SMEs and other wood industry players, will benefit from enhanced management and advocacy skills to better defend the interests of their members and promote the local wood industry.

Small-scale foresters and local communities
They will be supported in the sustainable management of forest resources, notably through assistance in obtaining domestic logging permits and training in the valorization of lesser-known species.
Women in the timber industry
The project places particular emphasis on the participation of women, offering them opportunities for training and economic empowerment that are often limited by social barriers.

Transporters and retailers in the timber industry
The project will support their structuring to improve working, storage and distribution conditions for legal and sustainable timber.
