The preservation of Intact Forest Landscapes (IFLs) is crucial for maintaining biodiversity and combating climate change. A recent study, titled “Feasibility and effectiveness of global intact forest landscape protection through forest certification: the conservation burden of intact forest landscapes “ led by Dr Joeri A. Zwerts, University of Utrecht, Netherlands and published in Frontiers in Forests and Global Change, investigates the feasibility and effectiveness of protecting these landscapes through forest certification.

The study highlights the challenges and potential solutions for balancing economic sustainability with conservation goals.

It reveals that overly restrictive logging policies in IFLs may hinder the growth of certified forest areas, potentially undermining both environmental and social benefits. By adopting an integrated landscape approach, as proposed by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), we can better align conservation efforts with the needs of local communities and stakeholders.
