Recruitment ATIBT Congo - Senior Technical Assistant

25.10.2024

As part of the launch of the Internal Wood Market (ASP) project in the Republic of Congo, ATIBT is recruiting a senior technical assistant to strengthen the competitiveness and sustainability of the domestic wood sector.

The artisanal forestry sector in the Republic of Congo, accounting for around 15% of the volume of logs produced, is a key driver of the national economy, particularly in wood processing. However, a large proportion of this production remains informal and escapes tax and sustainability standards. The government, with the support of the Ministry of Forest Economy, is working to formalise this sector and promote local production of legal timber, notably through the creation of special economic zones (ZES).

ATIBT, which has been active since 2014, is working with the Congolese authorities to strengthen the sustainable management of forest resources, with several projects supported by the European Union, the FAO and other partners. The Internal Wood Market (MIB) project aims to strengthen the competitiveness and sustainability of the domestic wood sector, while supporting the country's socio-economic development.

As part of this, ATIBT is looking for a Senior Technical Assistant to contribute to this ambitious project and improve the performance of stakeholders in the timber value chain, while ensuring sustainable and responsible management of forest resources.

Main responsibilities:

  • Coordination: Organising and coordinating project activities, including meetings with stakeholders and managing schedules and progress reports.
  • Supporting SMEs: Developing training plans for SMEs, building their technical capacity and providing support in terms of legal compliance.
  • Structuring: Supporting the creation of special economic zones (SEZs) for wood processing and helping to structure professional associations.
  • Advocacy: Contribute to advocacy for the promotion of legal timber, the standardisation of forest products and the improvement of the regulatory framework.
  • Communication: Developing and implementing a communication strategy to promote the sustainability and visibility of stakeholders in the domestic wood industry.

Profile required:

  • Education: Master's degree in forestry sciences, natural resource management or equivalent.
  • Experience: Minimum 10 years in the forestry sector, ideally with private companies or forestry federations. Experience in managing EU-funded projects is an asset.
  • Skills: In-depth knowledge of the forestry and timber sector in the Republic of Congo, IT skills, ability to work in a team and to communicate effectively.
  • Languages: Fluency in French, English preferred.

Location: Position based in Brazzaville, with travel at national and sub-regional level.
